Listening to Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4, I heard Jenni Murray say that the biggest cause of death for a woman under 44 years is being killed by a man known to her. Anna’s plight was not hers alone. This horrific statistic made me realise that this was more than a series of single crimes; it was a collective atrocity directed at women. If this had been happening during wartime their deaths would have been commemorated and honoured. Why was this not happening now?

My busy life continued; there seemed nothing I could do. But I never forgot Anna.
