Seventeen years later and the country was in lockdown. Luckily, just before covid started, I’d attended some workshops on book making at the London Centre for Book Arts so I had something to keep me occupied. I made over 40 books, an enjoyable masterclass of mistakes, until my son said “Mum, what are you going to do with all these books?” I immediately thought of Anna — and all the other women.
If I could find a way, I could use my books to record their names, make a page for each name. It would be difficult if not impossible but I was going to try anyway.
I started my search online in mid-January 2021 and I could not believe my eyes. The very first Femicide Census recording the deaths of women killed by men from 2009—2018 was going to be published at the end of that month!! All 1425 names. I could make my books and record their names with one name for each page.
